he main task of Police is to prevent crime, maintain law and order, investigation into the crime, and prosecution of criminals.

After Promulgation of Local Government order 2001 and Police Order 2002, and with the abolition of Office of District Magistrates, a new set up of Police and its relationship with District Nazim has been envisaged. The views of the provincial government as intimated to the federal government have not been reflected in the newly promulgated Police Ordinance.

At present Police is responsible to District Nazim for Law and Order. Investigation functions is being separated and placed under new set up at District level. Prosecution has already been separated and, as per decision of Federal Ministry of Interior, has to be placed under the Home Department. Currently Prosecution is under the Law Department. There are five Police Ranges in NWFP against seven Prior to promulgation of Police order 2002.

Capital City Peshawar Police is headed by Chief Capital City Police. All 24 District are headed by DPOs.

Achivements
  Police Order 2002 is being implemented successfully. Investigation and Prosecution functions    separated from law and order police. District Police Safety Commissions, Police complaint    Authority and Provincial Public Safety Commission are being set up. These authorities will monitor    and assess performance of police and take remedial measures.
  Funds have been provided for purchase of new vehicles and to meet cost of investigation by    recruiting new staff.
